Mobile, Alabama

Founded by French colonists in the beginning of the 18th century, Mobile, Alabama gets its name from the Native American tribe, the Mobilians, who had settled in the bay area. After being passed on to the English and then the Spanish, the territory finally became a part of the United States in 1813.

A traditional port city, Mobile hosted many different nationalities and cultures looking to profit from commerce. Although celebrations for Mardi Gras tend to start as early as November, round February, members of these private societies parade down the streets throwing gifts to passersby who marvel at their colorful masks. Recently, the City held a smashing party to celebrate 300 years of Mardi Gras, since the now popular manifestation was born here in the 18th century, thanks to the French settlers who left a permanent mark on the area.

What makes Mobile, Alabama special is the incredible amount of art museums, concerts and shows available in a City holding roughly 200 thousand people. From its score of archives and libraries documenting important historical facts to the huge Mobile Civic Center where performing arts and shows are regularly open to the public, the city offers many options for people of all tastes. While classical music lovers enjoy the Mobile Symphony, the Mobile Opera or the Mobile Ballet, followers of urban music can spend 3 days listening to their favorite bands in the famous 9-stage Bayfest.
